Mangroves are salt-tolerant plants which grow along the Coastal region. They are wetlands plants. In Kenya, mangroves can be found in Mtwapa Bridge, Ukunda and in Malindi’s Mida creek. There are over six different species of mangroves found along the Kenyan coast. These plants are highly adapted to survive in low oxygen supply but perhaps their most unique adaptation is the ability to survive in salty water.
There are many uses of mangrove trees:
1. Treating stomach problems
Did you know that mangrove trees can be used to treat stomach problems? The seeds of Xylocarpus granatum species which the locals in Mombasa call Mkomafi can be used to treat stomach upsets.
2. Extracting salt
You can use mangroves to extract/harvest salt from the shores. Mangrove trees have special roots which allow water to pass through but prevent salt. Salt is therefore accumulated around the roots of mangrove trees and can be extracted.
3. Source of wood
Mangrove trees also provide wood which can be used for cooking, fencing and to building canoes and housing structures.
4. Vegetables
Some species of mangrove trees can be used as vegetables for humans and fodder for animals.
5. Skin rushes
Mkomafi can also be used to treat skin rushes. You grind the fruits to a pulp and smear it on the affected area of your skin.
