The Gusii community is in the Southern Nyanza region.
Below are different words and their meaning commonly used in the community;
1. Egetutu
Egetutu is a common used word referring to a small bush. Egetutu is where animals such as rats hide.
2. Ekenyoro
Ekenyoro was drived from Kenyoro. In the Gusii community means a village.
A village is where people live.
3. Orosana
Orasana is also another commonly used word in the Gusii community.
Orasana means a bush.It can also mean a forest.
4. Rinani
Rinani is another word in the Gusii community which means a huge bush or can also be called a forest.
5. Omogondo
This means land where the community cultivates and grows crops such as bananas, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, sukumawiki and maize.
The community believes in land inheritance.
6.Chibando
Chibando means maize. The community grows maize and it is a main crop commonly grown in the Gusii region because the land is fertile.
7. Obwoyo
Obwoyo means fertilizer. The Gusii community uses ‘obwoyo’ to grow crops such as maize and beans. This can also be from cow dung, goats, sheep and chicken.
8. Egetacho
This means a water spring. The community goes to the water spring to fetch water for consumption and other domestic uses.
