Persons living with disability in Mombasa have lauded the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party for nominating one of their own.Through their coordinator Khamisa Maalim Zajjah, the members said the appointment of Ramla Said to the Mombasa County Assembly was a wise move and a sign of recognition of disabled persons.Speaking in Mombasa on Tuesday, Zajjah said persons with disability should be involved in development and leadership issues in the county.Zajjah said Ramla is a very hard working woman who would champion for the rights of persons living with disabilities in the county.“We need to be recognized so that we fully participate in political, development and leadership matters,” said Zajjah.She said persons with disability not only need representation in the county government but also in various departments within the county government.“We have various departments and county ministries where persons living with disabilities need to be appointed since they are capable of performing the different tasks,” she added.She appealed to Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to involve person living with disabilities in the running of county affairs.Speaking on Wednesday after she was sworn in, Ramla promised to fully represent disabled persons and champion for their rights.“If we work together we will truly overcome the various challenges we have been facing,” said Ramla.
