A group of girls has benefited after women living with disabilities made sanitary pads for them.
The over 500 girls in 20 schools in Nyali sub county received the sanitary pads as gifts to celebrate the International Women's Day celebrated on March 8 across the world.
The wladies who started a women's group last year said their objective is to be self reliant as they also help girls who come from humble backgrounds and who cannot afford to buy sanitary towels.
The group's leader Monicah Kiema said the pads are recyclable and are therefore environmentally friendly.
"These pads are ecofriendly. Once the girls have used them, they can wash and reuse them when they experience their menstrual cycle again," Ms Kiema said on Thursday in Mombasa.
She said despite the government having rolled out a program in some parts of the country where school girls receive sanitary towels for free, she said the project needs the held of the private sector as the national government alone cannot supply the safety product to all girls in schools.
Kiema called on well wishers to support the program by buying special sewing machines for the group which are used in making the sanitary products.
