They said that increased cases of cattle rustling in the area was attributed to the availability of small arms.

“It is not strange to find someone with an AK47 walking around. They no longer hide them. We fear that the gang might rise and become intolerable hence end up terrorising the residents,” said John Kamau, a resident.

Kamau noted Karandi area of Subukia was the most affected.

“Cattles are stolen at Karandi and are transported to Baringo, Marigat, Muchungui, Mogotio and Lower Solai. Most of the times the cows are slaughtered and their meat are sold to local butcheries,” notes Kamau.

Joseph Muchemi notes that poor roads and availability of small arms makes it possible for gangs to move out comfortably.

“They intimidate the residents with guns and in some cases fire gun shots at them,” adds Muchemi.

Muchemi notes that for now most residents have decided to arm themselves due to increased cases of cattle rustling.

Jackline Muthoni said that youths are abandoning schools and engage in robbery due to the fact that they are armed.

“Most youths are dropping out of school. They assume since they have the guns they have all the powers,” said Muthoni.
