A section of residents in Nyamira want the county government to investigate possibilities of corruption and fraud following reports that the main road at Kebirigo Trading Centre was already complete.

The road, whose construction kicked of mid-2014, is yet to be completed and grass has started growing despite evidence of repairs.

On Thursday the residents, led by youth leader Jason Ombego, accused area MCA Beuttah Omanga of conspiring with the contractors to mislead the county government over the status of the major road.

“On Monday, we obtained records from the department of transport that indicates the road is a done deal. We were shocked since nothing concrete took place besides clearance contrary to murruming that the county had budgeted for. We want the county government to investigate and unearth the mystery behind all this,” he said.

They accused the county assembly roads committee of allegedly authorising payments to contractors without inspecting the entire exercise.

“What worries us is that the committee of roads authorises payments without checking whether the work was done. The contract was in the first place controversially awarded and Sh6 million already paid for the shoddy work,” added Ombego.

Roads committee chairperson Ben Sironga urged residents to remain calm as his committee launched investigations into the project.

“I can’t deny that we authorised payment but we are also given reports from the ground. My committee will tour the region next week and advise accordingly,” he told reporters in Nyamira Town on Thursday.
