Thendu said that majority of the donkey vendors did not want to keep their donkeys in one place when they go to bed at night which would make it easier to monitor them.

Speaking to members of the press in Naivasha on Thursday, Thendu said that they had different locations at night which the animals were kept and they became easy targets.

“We had already suggested an open field where we would keep all the donkeys and hire watchmen to monitor them. We would also make sure they had constant food and water supply but many do not want that arrangement,” he said.

Thendu lamented that the rebirth of the donkey killings in the area have been contributed greatly to the increased numbers of jobless youth in the area.

“Many people in the area have used the donkeys to source for income and hence their killing has left them idle and hopeless,” he added.

On the donkey slaughterhouse, Thendu called for more investigations into the facility, saying that once the donkey supply ran out, the butchery might consider slaughtering zebras.

“It is very had to transport donkeys from Turkana and Mararal, since it is difficult to note the difference between donkey and zebras, they might also become targets,” he added.
