The rate of divorce among Muslim couples in Wajir County is on the rise, county Kadhi Sheikh Athman Abdiwahab has said.

Abdiwahab revealed that more than 200 divorce cases were reported last year and another 95 cases this year.

He pointed out that pressure by parents and families is the main causes.

“Most people are ignorant of the Islamic sharia pertaining to marriage as an institution. This makes it difficult to make the wise decision when approaching the institution,” he said on Tuesday.

He noted that 70 percent of court cases are related to divorce.

He has called on Islamic scholars and clerics to address the matter to protect the sanctity of marriage, further advising couples to respect marriage and view it as an institution.

“I urge married couples to give dialogue a chance in case of disputes instead of resorting to the court process,” added Abdiwahab.

He urged parents to advise their married children to uphold modesty, humility and perseverance and desist from rejecting their children's spouses because of their tribes, clans and financial backgrounds.
