Movies with DJs narrating the story line have ‘stolen’ the hearts of the people of Limuru.
These movies have become popular with four of the halls airing those reporting high numbers of viewers for every show. The DJs are known by the names Afro, Smith among others.
A customer pays Sh10 to watch one movie that takes about two hours.
Every movie hall can host up to 100 customers, and even more when the sitting space is fully occupied and others opt to stand up not to miss a moment.
Harry Waweru says business booms on weekends when people are off work, and have a lot of leisure hours.
“We get the most returns on Sundays when we air an average of five movies, and one can earn Sh5,000. Saturdays are also good, and weekdays also have returns although a fraction of weekends,” said Waweru.
Some of the halls supplement their shows with the playing of video games, PlayStation especially football that is loved by grown-ups and children alike.
The business is quite profitable as all an investor needs is a screen, power connection, benches, a hall and licensing. The room is kept dark even during the day for easy viewing of the moving pictures.
Some of the most popular movie halls have a local DJ narrating the movie ‘live’ to the joy and excitement of the audience.
John Kinyua, who was part of an audience said he loves a DJ who is comical and very simple in his narration.
“I go to watch the movies because they help me relax after a week or day of hard work, although I confess that they can be addictive,” said John, who said he especially loves action movies.
