Farmers in Nakuru County have been told not to be deceived into planting by the start of the short rains, which kicked in over the weekend.
County Agriculture Executive Stanley Chepkwony, said that farmers should be patient and wait for the rains to kick in fully, before getting into their farms.
Speaking Monday at his office after receiving a consignment of seeds to be distributed to farmers from the Kenya seed company, Chepkwony said that farmers should wait for a communication from the metrological department about the rains patterns before planting.
“We thank God because the rains are here with us, but farmers must not rush into planting because you never know when the rains might decide to disappear,” said Chepkwony.
“We must wait for sometimes and gauge the strength of the rains because we do not want a situation whereby people plant and the rains disappear before even the corps germinate,” said Chepkwony.
At the same time, he reiterated the county government’s call on farmers to only buy seeds and fertilizers from authorized distributors.
He said the government has procured enough seeds and fertilizers to satisfy every farmers needs in the county.
