Nyamira County Women Representative Alice Chae has appealed to the young people especially those  in urban centres not to neglect their aged parents living in rural areas.

She said it is a shameful trend for young people to enjoy their lives in towns leaving their parents to languish in poverty without anyone to care for them.

Speaking on Monday when she visited a home for the aged in Bosamaro ward, Nyamira County, Chae said there are numerous cases of aged people neglected by their relatives.

This, she said, exposes the elderly to miserable living conditions.

“When young people relocate to towns they  usually tend to forget the hardship their parents are going through at rural areas, and according to our African traditions we are supposed to embrace social responsibility through helping our aged parents and relatives,” Chae said.

She called upon the government to quickly release money set aside for the old so that they can receive their monthly allowance adding that the aged cannot be able to work in order to earn a living.
