Addressing journalists in Kisii Prof Evans Ongaga, an agriculture expert said that it is risky to plant on the first rain since most of the times the rain usually have not penetrated propely in the ground.

According to Onganga the crops planted with the first rain might become roasted as a result of heat if the rain did not continue.

He urged farmers who want to plant with the first rain to ensure that they have enough water to water their crops in case the rain do not continue.

He advised farmers to wait for another rain for them to start planting.

Some farmers in the county were set to start planting, following the Weekend’s first rain.

“First rains is sometimes frustrating, in the past farmers have incurred losses from early planting,” said Onganga.

The county has been facing long droughts. It started raining over the weekend.
