The government has called on the media to take part in ensuring that there is no violence in the country.
It now wants the media to cease giving coverage to reckless utterances made by political leaders that may cause havoc ahead of the August 8 polls.
Addressing the press in Mombasa, government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe called on the media to be cautious while reporting on political events adding that the press plays a key role in passing information.
“We are calling upon the media to reportedly pass the message that this country is bigger than any politician. The media has no responsibility whatsoever giving voice to people spreading anxiety implying that if they lose there will be no Kenya,” Kiraithe said, Saturday.
He also noted sensational reporting could frighten tourists and investors from coming into the country.
“The minute we start implying and spreading information showing that we are unstable, then we are killing the future on this nation,” he added.
Kiraithe further cautioned members of the public to avoid causing chaos and disruption in political rallies of the politicians they do no support by keeping off.
''You don’t need to attend meetings to create riot. Keep of meetings of leaders you don’t want,'' he said.
