Young people from the Gusii community have been challenged against shunning agriculture-based co-operative societies, instead embrace the co-operative movement institutions to economically empower themselves.
The Administration Officer in the office of the Kisii Governor,Patrick Lumumba has decried cases where majority of the young people from the community give agriculture a wide berth, with majority of them embracing the western culture of watching videos and movies at the expense of their economic empowerment.
Speaking at the Gusii Institute of Technology where he was a chieg Guest during the Wakenya Pamoja Sacco Society's Annual Delegates Meeting,Lumumba regretted that, despite the Gusii region being endowed by conducive climate and agricultural potential favouring many crops, the youth in the region continue shunning the agriculral sub-sector in search of white collar jobs.
"It is disheartening to see majority of our energetic and entrepreneurial skilled young people hanging around shopping and market centres, doing nothing productive to their lives, yet our region is endowed with conducive climate for agricultutral production which the youth can tap to empower themselves economically,"lamented Lumumba
Lumumba challenged young people from the coffee growing areas in the region to embrace the coffee-based primary co-operative societies and ensure they learn management skills from their ageing parents,to enhance continuity of the sub-sector which he said had high prospects in creating employment and wealth for the youth in the region.
