Matungulu Member of County Assembly, Mutinda Mule, has urged Machakos County Government not to use devolution to oppress residents.
Mule was speaking on Wednesday afternoon in Kangundo town where he addressed local traders who were on protest over high license fees by the county government.
“Devolution was meant to bring services closer to the citizens, but not to oppress them. Overcharging traders who are trying to make ends meet is not part of devolution,” notes Mule.
On Wednesday Kangundo traders held peaceful demonstrations where they matched to the town administrators’ office seeking audience from officials.
The angry traders held a meeting with the sub county director of revenue collection, Peter Mwololo, where he told traders to continue paying the previous rates.
He assured them that they have agreed with the county government that they should continue paying the previous amount when applying for license.
The license fee solution was further confirmed by the Deputy Sub-County Commissioner Victor Mwania.
The traders paralysed activities in Kangundo Sub-County in the better part of Wednesday morning.
