The current nurses and doctors strike that began on Monday has raised another health risk for patients that are suffering from drug sensitive diseases like TB and HIV/aids.
According to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital CEO Dr Enock Ondari once such patients miss taking drugs then it will force such patients to seek for second and at the same time third generation drugs which are out of reach and quite expensive
Ondari expressed his concern of some patients developing resistance to first generation drugs if not taken for more than two frequent days.
“When a patient who is HIV or TB victim do not take prescribed drugs for more that two days they become resistant to the drugs and that will force them to seek second and third generation drug,” Ondari told the media.
He said the dose of second-generation drugs for TB treatment goes for Sh1 million currently.
Ondari added that they are seeking for qualified pharmaceutical technologists to distribute the drugs to these slot of patients so that they are not subjected to the expensive treatment options in Kisii.
