A doctor has filed a petition seeking to repeal Female Genital Mutilation Act repealed. According to Dr. Tatu Kamau the ban is against the constitutional rights of adult women who would like to undergo the cut.

While filing her petition at the Machakos Law Courts, Kamau said that it is unfair for the county to allow women to undergo the cultural practice and bar women from the same.

She said that the act is infringing on the rights of women who want to take part in their respective cultural practices.  She further told the court that each of the communities in the nation has the freedom to practice any culture without any form of limitations. She further said that FGM is part of the cultural heritage of this nation, adding that the act should be reconsidered.

“Female circumcision is part of our National Heritage and history attests to the fact that women from circumcising communities have been as biologically functional and productive as women from non-circumcising communities,” she argued.
