Lower Eastern chairman of Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentist Union (KMPDU ) Harvey Mbithi, while addressing journalists at a Machakos hotel on Tuesday said that the governor, first lady and some executive county officials were interfering with their systems of work and that was the main reason behind their strike.

“We refuse to sit around here and have the governor's wife and MCAs come to hospitals  instructing doctors on what to do and what not to do. We  as a Union are not happy because procedures have to be used and our system of work respected,” Mbithi said.

The doctors have further threatened to permanently terminate their working contracts with the County if their complaints are not adhered to. Furthermore, the union swore to declare Machakos county a hostile employer for doctors around the nation.

This comes in the wake of these medics forwarding three petitions to Governor Dr Alfred Mutua complaining of what they alleged as his hostility towards pharmacists, medical practitioners and dentists in the county but their complaints were not worked on.

The only proper response received from the governor was a 48 hour ultimatum period within which to return to their duties or go home.
