Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has called on the Council of Governors to resolve the ongoing nurses' strike nationwide.

Speaking on Monday, KMPDU Secretary General Ouma Oluga said that doctors cannot effectively work in the absence of nurses, adding that public hospitals are greatly under-staffed and therefore absence of nurses is worsening the situation.

“I prescribe, but it is the nurse who administers the drug. We operate, but it is the nurse who gives post-surgery care,” he said.

Oluga further warned that the country could witness a higher death rate due to the health crisis facing public hospitals.

Nurses across the country have been on strike for the past three weeks, calling on the government to implement their Collective Bargaining Agreement that would see them earn higher salaries and allowances.
