The doctor’s strike is expected to soon come to an end if the government side agrees to sign a return-to-work formula which was filed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union officials in court on Monday.

The officials decided to call off the strike and ask their members back to work immediately the deal is executed.

KMPDU officials through their lawyers Philip Murgor and James told the Court of Appeal due to ongoing negotiations, both parties have agreed on a model-recognition agreement with a CBA for 2017-2021.

They said the deal is in conformity with the judgment by the Employment and Labour Relations Court.

If implemented, each doctor will be placed in the appropriate job group guided by the revised scheme of service for all medical officers, dentists, and pharmacists.

The emergency call allowance will now be renamed “doctors allowance” and will be payable to every medical practitioner, dentist, and pharmacist.

Every medical officer intern will earn an extra Sh36,000, totalling the sum payable to Sh66,000.

Medical officers and medical specialists (Grade II) will receive an extra Sh42,000 per month, totalling the sum payable to Sh72,000.

Grade I medical specialists, senior medical specialists, the chief medical specialists in Grade II and Grade I will all receive an extra Sh50,000 per month and increase the sum payable to Sh80,000.

All pending promotions will also be enforced within the first six months according to the revised scheme.

The deal further proposes that there must be no victimisation, forcing employers to immediately and unconditionally rescind all disciplinary processes, dismissal letters or any other written or verbal threat or punishment coming from the industrial action.

All salaries withheld by the government will be paid in full in the execution of the agreement not later than March 31 and cases emanating from the current strike will be withdrawn.

Doctor interns will be posted to their respective workstations in 30 days following successful completion of their studies as recommended by the relevant regulatory bodies.
