Doctors at the Coast Provincial General Hospital have successfully removed a toothbrush from the the stomach of a man from Kilifi who accidentally swallowed it.
A team of medic sled by Dr Ramadham Omar carried out an endoscopic and successfully removed the toothbrush stuck inside David Charo's stomach. Charo swallowed the toothbrush on Sunday.
Endoscopy refers to the removal of ingested objects from the stomach, duodenum and the throat by special techniques and does not involve surgery.
Charo had been advised by the doctors to avoid eating solid food but instead consume liquid foods to avoid pushing the toothbrush further. Charo, according to doctors is in stable condition.
Speaking to journalists at the health facility. Charo expressed relief and said he was "ready to return home after the successful procedure".
Charo swallowed the toothbrush at Paniani village in Ganze, Kilifi County. He said he tried to pull out the toothbrush was his attempt was unsuccessful.
Dr Mwachi Abi at the Coast Provincial General Hospital said such cases are not many. He said in the whole world, there are only 40 cases related to Charo's.
He said the youngest person to swallow a toothbrush was 18 years. Dr Mwachi said Charo will be released to go home on doctor's advisory.
