The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) has challenged the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town to look at the welfare of its intern doctors.

KMPDU National Treasurer Dr. Daisy Korir says there is the need for the intern doctors to stay in a secure place where their security is guaranteed.

Speaking at MTRH memorial grounds on Wednesday during the funeral mass for Dr. Boutrous Waithaka who was brutally murdered by unknown people in-house at Elgon view estate on Sunday, Dr. Korir asked MTRH administration to consider allowing intern doctors to stay within the hospital compound.

"The Hospital should look into the interns' welfare as a matter of agency. This idea of them staying away from hospital exposes them to risks and becomes a target of such heinous acts," noted Dr. Korir.

"We understand housing could be a challenge but they could at least be allowed to leave in one place since most interns are young and have no families," she added.

Dr. Korir further called for speedy investigations into the death to ensure culprits and brought to book."We've lost a very hardworking doctor who had a brighter future.

He was always punctual and waited until she pushed around by his superiors to do his work," she said.Dr. Waithaka will be buried in his rural home in Kiambu next Tuesday.

His body will be transported today from Eldoret to Kenyatta university Hospital mortuary ahead of his burial.
