The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMDU) has condemned the plan by the government to import expatriate medical practitioners from Cuba.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Monday, KMPDU Council Member Dr. Richard Mogeni said it is an embarrassment for the nation to get medical specialists from Cuba at the moment that doctor lecturers are on industrial action.
“We did not anticipate that this issue will take this long and it is an embarrassment to the nation because at the moment the government wants to get specialists from Cuba,” said Mogendi who is also a consultant at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town.
"It is quite ironical that the government is looking for specialists but it is not ready to appreciate them in a big way," he added
Similar sentiments were shared by the KMPDU treasurer Dr. Daisy Korir who said the strike is an issue that needs quick resolution, urging the medical schools to sit down with the ministry of education and Treasury to have the money that was negotiated for these doctors released.
“This is an issue that needs to be sorted out in a very quick way. Medical schools should sit down with the ministry of education and treasury and have the money that was negotiated for these doctors to be released,” added the KMPDU treasurer.
