Muslim leaders have castigated Female Genital Mutilation saying it’s against Islamic law and teachings.
Led by deputy chief Kadhi Rashid Omar, the leaders said the practice that is commonly witnessed among the Somali community has nothing to do with religion.
Mr Rashid who condemned FGM said the practice has no basis in Islam and those found practicing should be held responsible for violating the law.
Speaking in a media briefing in Nairobi, Mr Rashid said female circumcision is purely a cultural practice that has been sneaked into the religion.
“Female Genital mutilation has no basis in Islam, Whatever is being carried out, by Muslims or non-Muslims, especially the pastoralists, is purely depending on the culture which has been for generation within the community, that is our position,” he said as quoted by Baraka FM.
The deputy chief further said that Muslim does not permit people to practice FGM as it goes against its beliefs and lowers the dignity of the girl child.
“Islam prohibits the mutilation of human’s organs and we have not found any source that attributes to Islamic laws that a mutilation should be done to an organ of a human being, therefore the sanctity and the dignity of human beings must be preserved,” he added.
According to a recent report, North Eastern is said to be the leading region in perpetration of the outlawed practice as the practice is rampant in Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo and Tana River counties.
