Who exactly is mandated to name Machakos roads and streets? Is the governor the one to name Machakos roads and streets?
Well, the 2010 constitution is silent about this. The 2014 Kenya heroes act is not clear about it. Neither is the national emblems and names act.
When a road in Mombasa was named after ODM leader Raila Odinga's son Fidel Odinga earlier this year, there was an uproar and some opined that Fidel was not a hero enough to deserve such an honour.
According to a report published by Nation on February 4, nominated MCA Mohamed Hatimy defended the move saying, "Naming and renaming roads is executive power at the disposal of the governor. It does not even need approval from the county assembly."
And which names are appropriate? Is it only heroes, heroines and places? What of animals and birds? Under which ministry does the naming and renaming fall under?
Is it the ministry of information, communication and technology? Legislators should provide a clear guideline.
