Cord leader Raila Odinga should embark on a process of grooming his political heir who will take over after he exits from active politics, a political analyst Brain Momanyi has said.
Mr. Odinga is expected to try his last presidential luck in 2017, and he had indicated of serving only one term before retiring from active politics.
On Thursday, Momanyi, a political science lecturer at Maseno University, said Odinga’s slowed identification of his heir could throw the ODM party into ‘political’ shambles.
“I think this is the right time for Mr Odinga to colour his retirement from active politics by grooming someone who should take over by the time he exits the stage,” Momanyi said.
“The earlier it’s done, the better because it would help minimise political wrangles that could bring about confusion and subsequent disintegration of the ODM party. It’s important that someone is prepared to step into his shoes given his outstanding legacy in the Kenyan political arena,” he added.
The varsity don said the party could witness hard times and compared them with cracks that emerged in Ford Kenya in 1994 following the death of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
“Raila should learn from history because in 1994, Ford Kenya was a victim of political intrigues after Jaramogi’s death. Raila should avoid similar scenario that saw him tussle for supremacy with Mr Michael Wamalwa,” he added during Thursday’s phone interview.
