Construction of a donkey abattoir at Kithyoko market at the border of Kitui and Machakos counties is expected to be opposed by locals.

This is because donkeys are used as beasts of burden in Kitui County. An agricultural officer in the area.

Joseph Kamonzo, said residents may disrupt operations at the abattoir because donkey theft may increase in the area.

“The numbers of donkeys are likely to drop since donkeys will be sold to be slaughtered. Theft cases may also increase and this will hinder operations at the facility,” Kamonzo said.

He added that the availability of market for donkey products in and outside the country will also contribute to the decline in numbers of donkeys.

He said most farmers in Kitui use donkeys to carry water from rivers among other domestic duties.
