Kisumu County Chief Executive in-charge of Education, Youth, Culture and Social Services Ms Jennifer Atieno is appealing to donors to come out and help improve the state of the learning facilities in Kisumu’s slums, barely two days after classrooms worth millions of shillings were officially opened in Migosi Primary School. The project was funded by the German government.
According to Ms Atieno, the learning conditions in slum settlements are deplorable for learning to take place hence the need to improve the conditions there to make learning friendly.
"The slum settlements here need serious interventions to make learning to be friendly as many schools lack the necessary facilities to facilitate learning. This therefore calls for donors to come out and help make the lives of children in this area to be better," said Ms Atieno.
Ms Atieno said that the country budget on education is small and hence cannot fully satisfy the huge requirements to upgrade the learning facilities in the slums, which she said need necessary support both from the central government and donors.
"The county government runs on a tight budget which cannot be adequate to provide all learning requirements in the slums of Manyatta, and Nyalenda. But we have tried our level best."
