The Bill of establishing public universities in at least every county that is currently under discussion in the senate has received a boost from a number of academicians.
Lead by Environment CS Judy Wakhungu, the dons on Wednesday endorsed the proposed law but urged the senate to do more consultation with the commission for universities.
They said, during the launching of E-Waste management system at Kisii University, that each county should be served with a university to make education easily accessible to all learners without necessarily travelling long distances to achieve it.
“I am happy with the senate and the Bill is long overdue. We need every Kenyan to get an equal opportunity to higher education and this is the right time,” said VC John Akama.
They urged the parliament to set aside more funds to the Higher Education Loans Board for the purpose of increasing loans awarded to learners.
“As much as we call for more universities, we need more funding to HELB and this can be done by parliament and that is why senators have to include funding of these children,” added Prof Maurice Amutabi.
CS Wakhungu lauded senators for the Bill and urged county governments to partner with national government to support the initiative.
“It will be important for county governments to work hand in hand to ensure the Bill is effectively implemented once assented to by the presidents,” she said.
