Universities academic and non-academic staff have vowed to continue with their strike, until the government implements of Collective Bargaining Agreement signed early this year.
On Thursday, union officials of the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), UASU and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational institutions, Hospitals and Allied workers (KUDHIHA) started their protest march from the University of Nairobi graduation square ending up at Jogoo house where they camped, demanding audience with Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi over the ministry’s delay in releasing the remaining funds.
UASU Vice-chair Constantine Wasonga told the ministry to conduct an audit of university workers and root out ghost workers from the payroll who might benefit from the monies, hence denying legitimate workers their right.
The unions’ officials called off the demos after a closed door meeting with an undersecretary in the ministry of Education Johnstone Nanyumba, who promised resolution of the matter by Wednesday next week.
They vowed to escalate their strike if their demands are not met fully by then.
