Mombasa MCA has strongly defended ‘Nyumba kumi’ village elders in the county saying that they have been doing an exemplary job on the ground.
Faith Mwende Boniface, the Kipevu Ward Representative in the Mombasa County Assembly said that despite the elders being paid nothing for their work they have dedicatedly respond to security matters at the grassroots level and they should not carry any blame.
She said that she has been directly in touch with the ‘Nyumba kumi’ ambassadors and what they need is direct assistance and support from the government so that they can continue serving the community.
Mwende said that ‘Nyumba kumi’ security ambassadors in the County purely perform their duties under voluntary bases but they attended to any emergencies within their locality.
She called on both the National and the County government to help the community security workers and give them stipend so that they perform their duties properly.
“These elders are actually performing what’s the police should do, so before we blame them let us accord them the assistance they need to combat crime in our locality” she added.
She, however, appealed to the ‘Nyumba kumi’ ambassadors to ensure that they remain vigilant throughout the new year’s eve so that all goes well.
Mwende also appealed to parents within Kipevu ward to ensure that they monitor their children’s movement during the festive season so that they do not indulge in criminal activities, drug abuse or any other social vices.
“We as parents should ensure that our children remain safe and on January 2, 2018, they are all back at school” she added.
