Kisumu residents have been asked to be keen before attempting to treat malaria.

Kisumu’s Port Florence Hospital Medical Officer Polycarp Koyanda noted that most residents normally confuse typhoid with malaria since the symptoms are almost the same.

Speaking to this writer at the medical facility today, the medic said that wrong diagnosing of typhoid could lead to death as the symptoms may worsen and get serious.

“The problem that you find with most patients is that they tend to treat most illnesses with similar symptoms as malaria like malaria. This, however, does not cure the illness but only reduces the pain which could lead to more severe symptoms that could at times lead to death or serious illness,” said Dr Koyanda.

He challenged the residents to go for check-ups whenever they feel sick to avoid wrong treatment and enhance proper diagnose.

Dr Koyanda also challenged his fellow medics to conduct laboratory tests before administering medication to their patients.

“It is very dangerous on the side of patients when they are diagnosed with malaria yet they are suffering from typhoid. The only way we can fight typhoid is through the right diagnose of the illness,” he said.
