Iftin Ward MCA aspirant Mohamed Gabow has urged the public to elect literate leaders who will be able to grasp complicated issues that leadership comes along with.

Gabow said during the 2013 polls, election of some of illiterate leaders has led to failure by County assemblies to come up with laws that impact positively on the lives of the ordinary mwananchi.

Gabow, who is a former Garissa mayor said the MCAs are only focusing on their personal benefits and they have completely forgotten the role of oversight, representation and legislation.

He said well-educated leaders will be able to comfortably and effectively articulate the plight of the electorate.

“Most MCAs saw an opportunity to enrich themselves. They resorted to arm-twisting the governors and that is why today, MCAs are some of the widely travelled and rich individuals,” he said.

Gabow further said that the electorate elected individuals in the County assemblies who have little education who could not critically analyse issues to enable them fulfill important responsibilities that they are required to.

“What happened in the last election particularly in regard to devolution and election of MCA was purely an accident and a disaster. Our people did not realize the seats were almost equal to the National Assembly as per the role they serve.”

“Our people and many Kenyans assumed that these are just low level seats and as a result, ended up electing people who cannot fulfill these important responsibilities. Five years down the line, there is a lot of regrets and reflections,” he said.
