The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) has urged devolved units across the county to stop giving people with disability cash but instead, start small projects that will help them earn a living.
According to the Association's national assistant treasurer Isaack Kotut, most of the funds given to the disabled are used to purchase food, clothing and thereafter leaving them languishing in poverty.
“We want to thank governor Jackson Mandago for setting Sh23 million for the people with disability in this financial year, but this time around we want them to give us fertilizers, seeds, help us plough our land and also give us funds to start businesses,” he said in Eldoret, Tuesday.
“This will help us be empowered financially and we will not depend on anyone for our upkeep,” added Kotut.
He, however, urged both the National and County governments to ensure that children from disabled parents are given bursaries for them to continue their education.
“It is sad that sometimes students from disabled parents are denied bursaries yet their parents are unable to raise funds for them to go to school. When you educate a child of a disabled parent he or she will help his/her parents in future," noted Kotut.
