Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu has faulted youth for engaging in “too much” gossip on social media instead of working to earn a living.
Although the county chief said social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter were good information sources, he said some youth used them in unproductive ways.“What worries me is the rate at which youth are immersing themselves on social media,” he said on Thursday.“Social media isn’t bad but there are people particularly youth who hang on these platforms from 6am to 6pm and you wonder what time they work.”Mruttu said his administration had availed a fund for youth to access and start businesses but only a handful had applied for the cash. There are numerous business opportunities in the county for young people to grab and capitalize on to prosper he added.“We have set a fund under the Trade and Tourism department that is meant to boost start-ups but the uptake of this money is quite low,” he said.Mruttu, who is seeking for a second term as governor said if re-elected, his administration will inject more money into the fund.He expressed optimism that he will defeat his primary challenger, Wundanyi MP Thomas Mwadeghu in August.
