An MP from Mombasa has asked leaders and civil society groups to stop interfering police work as the war on criminal gangs continues.

Mishi Mboko (Likoni, ODM) said police must wipe out all criminal gangs in the port city for the town to become safe for investment.

"Who is not under threat from these gangs? Police should be allowed to do their job without interference," she posed as she addressed the press on Monday in Mombasa after a meeting convened to discuss security. The meeting was chaired by County Commissioner Evans Achoki.

Mombasa has for the last two months been hit by a wave of insecurity as criminal gangs maraud Mombasa town terrorizing residents.

Over 10 suspected members of the various criminal gangs in the county have so far been shot dead with Likoni constituency which Mishi represents in Parliament recording the highest number is police shootings.

The Monday meeting called to discuss security was attended by officials from the national and county governments, sub-county administration, political leaders and members of peace committees.

Other were civil society groups CSO's, religious leaders, community leaders among others.

Mishi on Sunday accused some leaders in the county of being lax in fighting crime. Some leaders in the county have been accused of funding the gangs which include 'Wakali Kwanza', Brothers For Life and Chafu.

"All leaders were elected to help residents realise the dreams. Where are they in the fight against crime?" she said.
