School principals have cautioned Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i over his recent announcement that there would be a carckdown by the government against principals whose schools recorded dismal results in the 2016 KCSE exams.
The teachers termed Matiang’i’s approach as ridiculous and with the ill will to intimidate them.
Kenya National Union of Teachers Kiambu East executive secretary Clement Gicharu together with a number of principals who spoke to the Nation on condition of anonymity said Matiangi must first embrace a holistic approach in combating poor results and not by targetting teachers alone.
Mr Gicharu said that apart from teachers, many other factors could contribute to poor performance, citing student ability and the lack of cooperation from other education stakeholders.
“We (Knut) will not allow him (Matiang’i) to cause unnecessary fear and panic among the teachers. We have been supporting his activities, but on this one, we are not with him and we will not allow him take that route,” he said.
