Mombasa residents have been urged to ensure that their houses are secured before they travel to rural areas for the ongoing festive season.
Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki said that some families travel and leave their houses unattended, a situation that resulted in burglaries.
Achoki said that it was dangerous for locals to travel to rural areas leaving no one behind to take care of their homes.
He said that in the recent past locals have been greeted with rude shock after they return and find their houses have been broken into, and property was stolen.
He was speaking in Mombasa during the New Year’s Eve security briefing.
Achoki said that criminal gangs may use the opportunity and break into the houses since they are left unattended.
“If you must travel to rural areas for the festive season, kindly ensure that you leave a guard behind who will take care of your properties,” he said.
He said that many burglary cases were reported from Kisauni, Likoni and Changamwe areas where locals come back and find their properties stolen.
“If you will not leave behind a guard behind then install alarm systems on your doors as a security measure,” he added.
Achoki, however, urged security personnel in the entire County to be more vigilant during the festive season.
He said that such cases should be tamed by all means.
The Mombasa County Commissioner, however, revealed that Mombasa County has remained calm as no major insecurity incidents were reported since the beginning of the festive season.
