Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan has cautioned parents against paying money to secure birth certificates for their children.
Hassan on Saturday at a public baraza in Eldoret town said by law a birth certificate is issued free of charge warning officials issuing the document that anyone found soliciting for bribes to give out the document will be arrested and prosecuted.
"I have received many complaints that there are officials demanding payment of up to Sh1,000 to issue birth certificates," Hassan said during the meeting.
"These certificates are issued for free. Report any official demanding for money in order for the certificates to be processed," he added
Parents are currently under pressure to secure the documents because the Education Ministry has to use the certificate codes to prepare a database for all primary school children in the country.
Parents for the last close to one month have been queuing at government offices to secure the document whose deadline is next week.
Most parents have been complaining that officers preparing and processing the certificates have been demanding for bribes before issuance of the vital document.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang last week said Class Eight pupils without the document will not be registered for their KCPE examinations.
