Nyamira County senator Okong’o Omogeni has asked tea company directors in the county to pay workers well.
According to the senator, workers should be given good payment to boost their living standards, pay bills and school fees for their families.
“Tea company directors should stop paying workers peanuts. It is time the workers should be given good pay so that they can be able to pay school fees for their children, provide foods and pay other bills,” he said.
The senator urged the directors to consider employing youths from the region to end the idleness among the youths in villages.
“Local youths should be absorbed to work in the tea processing companies in the region before foreigners will be considered. We all know charity should begin from home before going out to far areas,” he added.
He called on the parents to ensure their children are enrolled in school and stop forcing underage children to be employed in the companies.
He was speaking when he toured Borabu Sub County on Friday.
