Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has asked politicians in the county to stop politicizing the decision to move hawkers from the Eldoret town Central Business District (CBD).
Chemno has instead challenged the leaders to help in moving the hawkers from the town.
“The County decision to move hawkers from Eldoret CBD has nothing to do with politics. We are urging local politicians to stop inciting hawkers not to move out of the CBD to avoid unnecessary wrangles between them and county reinforcement officers,” said Chemno.
He said the county has no ill intentions against the hawkers.
"Hawkers are being moved from town to the markets where the county has spent millions to build. We respect hawkers because they contribute much to the county’s revenue collection,” he stated.
The Deputy governor, however, called on county askaris not to harass hawkers but instead use procedural ways to have them out of the CBD.
“My appeal to county askaris is that they should not use a lot of force to force the hawkers out of CBD but instead use polite ways to urge the hawkers move out to create room for expansion so that more investors can come in the town,” added Chemno.
He was speaking on Sunday at Maili Nne trading centre on the outskirts of Eldoret town.
