Farmers have been cautioned against selling green maize to traders.

According to Farming Systems Kenya Chairman Paul Mugo, the sale of green maize by growers is likely to compromise food security in the country.

"A majority of local farmers are selling the fresh produce to brokers oblivious to the looming shortage of the dry cereal," he said on Saturday.

Speaking when he trained farmers on modern pest management practices in Molo, Mugo encouraged farmers not mind the extra cost of harvesting, shelling, and storage of their maize.

"The country is on verge of experiencing an aggravated food shortage starting early next year as a result of different factors that have led to poor yield production," he noted.

"Preserve your fresh produce as prices of dry foods are expected to rise sharply in a few months time," Mugo added.

He urged both the national and county governments to come up with policies to ban green maize trade.
