Nominated member of county assembly Esther Njeri Mengere has called on residents not to protect relatives in case they are caught defiling or raping their own. Ms Mengere claimed that majority of the families shield their members, hence the crime goes unpunished. Speaking to the press in Naivasha, the MCA lamented that there are many unreported crimes occurring in the area yet no legal action can be taken against the perpetrators. “It’s unfair for a parent to refuse to report a crime just to protect one of their own. There is an increase in cases of incest and defilement yet many of the parents are not willing to bring this people to book,” she cited Ms Magere cited that many people end up using rape as a tool to punish their kin. “It has become a common trend especially in cases of land disputes. Many children have become victims of circumstances and hence it leads to serious mental torture,” she added She also noted that some parents transferred their children to rural areas in case they were defiled as a means of hiding the evidence from the courts. “Unfortunately many children are also forced to decant their statement or to relocate so that they don’t testify against them,” she added
