National Super Alliance (NASA) lawmakers now want Kenyans to ignore President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party calls for public participation to amend election rules. The proposed changes which since the introduction to both Houses of Parliament, have fuelled acrimony between NASA and Jubilee. On Tuesday, the Select Committee led by Baringo North MP William Cheptumo held the first public hearing on the proposed electoral amendments. But Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang' and Women Rep Gladys Wanga argued that public participation was uncalled for because the changes risked reversing gains made in maturing the country's democratic space."Kenyans should refuse Jubilee's ill motives in changing the electoral laws. Public participation should be ignored," Kajwang' said.Wanga termed the move by the ruling party unconstitutional, saying Jubilee was not committed for a free and fair fresh presidential election."The introduction of the two bills in both the National Assembly and the Senate simultaneously was a breach of the Constitution which requires a bill to be considered in one House at a time," she said. The public participation sessions are expected to end on Thursday.
