According a Limuru police boss Mohammed Bwakuli, the fire is alleged to have been caused by a section of students at around 1am while others were asleep.

Ndeiya MCA Nelson Munga in a Facebook post early in the morning said he was at the scene and confirmed that indeed the two students had died.

He said: “Am (sic) already at the scene of Stephjoy boys and I can confirm that two boys are dead. The boys set school dorms on fire, while several of them were taken to Ndeiya health centre and Tigoni level 4 hospital. Thanks to county government response team from fire to ambulance for quick and urgent steps. Ohhhh dear God help us.”

The incident comes a few weeks after the sister school, going by the same name, was closed indefinitely after students burnt down their dormitory too.

The institution management has been accused of corporal punishment towards the students that has been causing them to strike and burn the dormitories.

Five students from Stephjoy Girls’ High School had gone missing for several days before the dormitory was burnt.

The management, led by the CEOs, have refuted claims that they have been punishing the children without offenses as they allege. Instead, the management said that the students are in panic mode due to mock exams. They accuse the students of seeking ways to evade the examinations.
