In a mission dubbed Hernia Mission Camp, both adults and children received much needed corrective surgery for the past one week.

The surgery mission has been conducted by Kiambu county department of health services and Gatundu hospital medical staff in collaboration with the Hernia International Surgeons from the USA and UK.

Kiambu Health Chief Officer Dr Stephen Njuguna said that patients have been given a new lease of life after the corrective surgery.

'This hernia mission has offered corrective surgery that repair and restore, stabilising the unstable areas and help the affected patients rediscover a pain free life," said Dr Njuguna.

Dr Njuguna also added at the mission has developed the capacity of local surgeons through interaction with Hernia International Surgeons.

"Kiambu County patients have increasingly gained confidence in the local surgeons due to safety in the successful surgeries that they have been conducting in partnership with the Hernia International Surgeons which has led skills transfer, exchange of knowledge and training and research," he added.

A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. Hernias are most common in the abdomen, but they can also appear in the upper thigh, belly button and groin areas.
