Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday joined the world in pay tribute to Sudan, the last surviving northern white rhino.

"A sad, unpleasant day as the world bidsfarewell to Sudan, the last male northernwhite rhino. He was a gentle giant, adoredby many for his majestic poise and strength.We salute those who watched over him at OlPejeta Conservancy, and until the end, foreasing his suffering,"he tweetted.

He said that Kenya government will honour Sudan honour in fightting to protect Najin and Fatu, the remaining sub-speciesand invest more in wildlife conservation.

Sudan, who was 45, lived at the Ol PejetaConservancy in Nanyuki ,Laikipia county. He was put to sleep on Monday after age-related complications worsened significantly.

His death leaves only two females - his daughterand granddaughter - of the subspecies alive inthe world.

Sudan will be remembered for his unusually memorable life. In the 1970s, he escapedextinction of his kind in the wild when hewas moved to Dvůr Králové Zoo.Throughout his existence, he significantlycontributed to survival of his species as hesired two females.
