Being the first beneficiary of the surprise truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition chief Raila Odinga, the coming together of Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi gives Deputy President William Ruto a new headache ahead of his presidential bid in 2022.
Ruto had laid his strategies well by grabbing the swaying ODM MPs after Raila reconciled with Uhuru.
This was seen in his tour to the coastal region, whereby a good number of MPs from the area declared their support in his presidential bid in 2022.
However Mutua's declaration of being in the ballot has sent shivers to Ruto's veins. Mutua alone is not a threat but a headache comes in when he combines efforts with Gideon Moi.
Speaking in Kapsogo Market in Kabarnet, during the homecoming ceremony of Baringo Centra MP Joshua Kendie, Mutua said he will sit down with Gideon Moi and come out with a coalition that will enable them to realise victory in 2022.
He also said that he is not a coward or a watermelon and he won't betray his supporters.
"I want to make known that in 2022 I will meet all the others on the ballot. We are in discussions with Gideon and can confidently say 'mbele Iko sawa'," Mutua said.
This gives Ruto a political headache since he knows that if the two comes together, they will come out more strongly. This means the Rift Valley votes will be divided and Ruto has not yet been assured of the Mt. Kenya' votes.
