The decision by Deputy President William Ruto to secretly fund unity among the Gusii community has suffered a major blow following resistance from a section of leaders.
Understandably, a meeting for all opinion leaders across Kisii and Nyamira Counties is scheduled this month, in which formation of a new party is among the agenda.
But ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire has opposed the plot, saying the plans do not reflect the popular needs by the people.
"When you talk of unity, you should also explain to the people that we are united. Forming another political party to benefit someone is uncalled for," he said.
Wiper Vice Chairman Victor Swanya dismissed the plans, saying locals should be allowed to elect leaders of their own choice.
"We are living in a liberal society. Trying to push for a party is denying people their democratic rights. Such efforts should be condemned," he said.
Also, elders from the region are secretly pushing for unity, with North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko revealing that all elected leaders have been summoned for a meeting.
