A meeting to unite leaders across the Gusii region in which deputy president William Ruto was said to be championing collapsed on Sunday after boycott by top leadership.
Seen as part of forming a single political party that will unite leaders from both Nyamira and Kisii Counties, only few MPs managed to attend the Sunday's meeting at Rift Valley Lodge.
Sources privy to the meeting intimate that Ruto has been pushing for the populous community to to unite behind one party to propel his 2022 bid.
"The DP has been pushing for our unity and the Sunday meeting was a big letdown to him. Things did not go as planned," said an MP who spoke in confidence.
He added: "Formation of one party is top of the agenda and this has received opposition from some leaders."
Understandably, Governors John Nyagarama (Nyamira) and James Ongwae (Kisii) along with their deputies Joash Maangi and Amos Nyaribo snubbed the meeting.
Also absent were Simba Arati, Senators Sam Ongeri (Kisii) and Okong'o Mogeni (Nyamira) both who were invited.
The DP along with Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i are said to be keen to have the community unanimously vote for Ruto in 2022.
